Spec Miata (SM) racing is one of the most popular and accessible forms of motorsport in the United States, and several sanctioning bodies host numerous events where participants can race a Spec Miata. Here’s a breakdown:
1. SCCA (Sports Car Club of America)
The SCCA offers a variety of regional and divisional series, giving you meaningful opportunities to race and grow within the community. Additionally, the SCCA Majors are part of the Hoosier Super Tour, which is one of the highest levels of amateur racing. Not only that, Spec Miata is included in the National Championship Runoffs – the oldest championship event in grassroots club racing, which celebrated its 60th year in 2024.
2. NASA (National Auto Sport Association)
NASA organizes regional Spec Miata races across the U.S., making them accessible to racers in various locations. Spec Miata participants are also eligible to compete for a NASA National Championship, which features intense competition.
3. WRL (World Racing League)
WRL is an endurance racing series where Spec Miatas are a common sight. Teams often use Spec Miatas for long-distance endurance racing.
4. ChampCar Endurance Series
While not exclusive to Spec Miatas, this series allows them to participate in affordable, grassroots endurance racing events.
5. AER (American Endurance Racing)
Similar to WRL and ChampCar, Spec Miata is frequently used in AER events, thanks to its affordability and reliability, making it a favorite in endurance racing.
6. FARA
This exciting new racing series runs its own run group for the entire FARA schedule. All races were streamed live and announced by the one and only Greg Creamer and friends, providing professional commentary for each race. This series had over $15K in cash prizes and contingency awards each weekend.
Other Regional or Club Series
Many regional clubs host Spec Miata racing, including independent racing organizations and track day events.
Spec Miata racing is incredibly versatile, with events held across the country, so there’s a lot of opportunity to get involved!
